A young man, reportedly known for consuming tramadol and Indian hemp, appeared in Bangui's Gobongo neighborhood, located at the northern exit of the city, claiming to have been resurrected. His sudden appearance and extraordinary claims quickly drew attention in the community. Authorities later apprehended the individual, bringing an end to the bizarre public spectacle. At the central police station, the suspect abandoned his 'resurrected' narrative and confessed to inventing the entire story, detailing the fabrications behind his elaborate tale.

The 'Resurrected' Man's Tale

The man claimed to be the son of a family residing in the Gobongo neighborhood, asserting that he had died and been buried years prior. He presented a detailed, albeit fantastical, account of his supposed death and return. He told a story of sorcerers replacing his body with that of a dog following his death, compelling him to labor in fields to instigate mystical road accidents. According to his narrative, this servitude was a consequence of supernatural forces. The individual further stated that he had successfully escaped this mystical enslavement, traveling on foot from Basse-Kotto to Bangui to return to his supposed family. His narrative captivated some onlookers, but also immediately raised suspicions among others who knew the family he claimed to be a part of.

Doubts and Exposure

Doubts regarding the man's story emerged quickly among residents and those familiar with the family he claimed as his own. The father of the Gobongo family, whom the man claimed as his own deceased son, expressed profound skepticism about the resurrection story. He firmly stated that he had personally kept vigil over his true son's body at the church after his death, making the impostor's claims impossible to believe. This direct contradiction from the purported father was a significant blow to the resurrection narrative.

Further undermining the man's story, a witness from Mobaye identified the young man not as the Gobongo family's son, but as the son of a loader from PK12, located in the commune of Bégoua. This witness provided key information that contradicted the man's entire fabricated history. The witness further disclosed that the individual was an escaped mason who had committed theft in Mobaye, providing a more grounded, criminal explanation for his presence and evasive behavior, directly contradicting his narrative of a supernatural ordeal and a journey from Basse-Kotto. The revelations from Mobaye painted a picture of a man on the run, rather than one returned from the dead.

Confession and Arrest

Police officers from the FICU (Force d’Intervention du Corps Urbain) apprehended the individual, bringing him in for questioning. Following his arrest, the suspect abandoned his earlier resurrection claims and disclosed his actual identity. He revealed that his true name is Anselme Mbata. During questioning, Mbata also provided the name of his biological father, further clarifying his personal details and definitively contradicting the earlier fabricated narrative about his family in Gobongo. This confession brought an end to the public deception and allowed authorities to begin piecing together his true background.

Family Fallout

The revelations surrounding Anselme Mbata's true identity and his elaborate deception have caused significant familial tension and distress. Mbata's biological father, whose name was not immediately released, reportedly threatened legal action against the Gobongo family. This threat specifically targeted the father of the deceased young man whom Mbata had initially impersonated, claiming he was his resurrected son. The biological father's dispute centers on the distress and confusion caused by Mbata's false claims, which entangled his family with the Gobongo household in a deeply unsettling manner. This development shows the complex personal fallout arising from the fabricated resurrection story in Bangui, further complicating the already unusual circumstances of the case for all parties involved and noting the emotional toll of the deception.
