Former Central African Republic minister Marie-Reine Hassen addressed a conference-dîner at the French Senate on 23 October 2026 to allege that the Central African Republic is undergoing unprecedented levels of resource exploitation. The event, hosted within the halls of the French Senate, provided a platform for Marie-Reine Hassen to present her assessment of the current state of the nation. She stated that the current influence of Russia and the Wagner Group has surpassed the impact of 66 years of French colonization regarding the extraction of local assets.
Characterizing the current state of affairs as a "razzia," or an expedition of pillage and spoliation, Marie-Reine Hassen detailed the systemic removal of essential natural resources. She identified gold, diamonds, wood, fuel, livestock, and various forest products as the primary commodities being targeted. According to her assessment, these activities are occurring with the full knowledge and complicity of the nation's leadership, leaving local populations in a state of crisis. The former minister emphasized the scale of this extraction, noting that the systematic depletion of these specific resources is fundamentally altering the economic landscape of the Central African Republic.
During the conference-dîner, Marie-Reine Hassen showed that the current situation represents a significant departure from previous historical periods. By comparing the contemporary influence of Russia and the Wagner Group directly to the 66 years of French colonization, she sought to highlight the intensity of the current resource drain. The former minister argued that the current extraction methods are more full and damaging to the Central African Republic than those experienced during the colonial era. Her testimony at the French Senate serves to bring international attention to the alleged pillage of gold, diamonds, wood, fuel, livestock, and forest products, which she maintains are being systematically stripped from the country.
